Free agency is a unique tactic utilized within the professional sports arena to allow an athlete to have opportunities outside of those originally set, due to the expiration of their current contract.  This practice is one which proves beneficial, as it gives teams opportunities to get impact players to become proud members of their team, hopefully bettering the new team’s standings in the coming years.  In terms of the top five free agent linemen, there are 5 for the offense line, as well as 5 for the defense line.

The offense line includes the likes of Carl Nicks, Chris Myers,  Demetrius Bell, Jared Gaither and Evan Mathis.

Nicks has shown prowess as an offensive guard for the New Orleans Saints, earning him the revered title of being one of the best within the league.  Like Nicks, Mathis has great skills in keeping positions open for teammates and furthering key plays.  Gaither and Bell both correlate in the offensive tackle positions; they have excellent fit and dependability in the games, easily able to transform bumps into plays.  Myers is the only center in the top five mix, he offers great versatility between the center and guard positions, as well as indicates a thorough understanding of his position and the depth and breadth of which to play his position.

Similar to the offensive line, the defensive line’s players also offer their own unique skill sets which make the following men the top 5 free agent (defensive) linemen — Mario Williams, Robert Mathis, Calais Campbell, Jason Jones and Cliff Avril are amongst the distinguished men whom fall into this elite grouping.

With the exception of Jason Jones, the aforementioned men all contribute to the defensive end position on their respective teams, however each adds his own unique twist, which in turn qualifies them for a spot on the 5 free agent (defensive)  linemen list.

Avril has tenure with Detroit, as well as a natural explosive passing technique, which allows time for the ball to be mitigated down the field.  Campbell and Mathis both exemplify sheer productivity of the field, as well as a connection with their team mates — these are invaluable skills which distinguish these men from the rest of their defensive counterparts.

Williams, a highly touted defensive end for Houston has speed, a proven history of success in his position, as well as a knack for understanding points of impact in regards to his position.  Jones, a defensive tackler, has notoriety for his interior pass rushes, he is explosive in his stance; it is this explosive nature which allows for him to upset the opposing  team’s players, primarily the quarterback.

Each of the players, whether they be offensive or defensive linemen, have a unique set of skills which can be attributed to their unique training methods in college, as well as the furthering of these methods on the professional level.  It can be expected that amongst seasoned players, these will be the top men to watch for when it comes to free agency standings.
