Alex Smith Negotiating With Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins and Alex Smith are currently in negotiations, a NFL source told the Denver Post. Smith took the red-eye from San Francisco to Seattle and met with the team on Sunday. All reports indicate that the two sides are discussing a multi-year deal that would be worth around $8 million per year.

Smith became upset with the team, after the 49ers threw their hat in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

A contract with Smith an the 49ers seemed to have been put on hold thanks to agent Tom Condon representing both Smith and Manning — so an irritated Smith has decided to explore his options.

Despite some mockery and concern surrounding Alex Smith, he would be a great fit in Mike Sherman’s offense. I believe the Dolphins passing on Matt Flynn is more of an indication that Sherman is running the offense and not head coach Joe Philbin, who would have favored Flynn. In Sherman’s offense, a more athletic quarterback can do the most damage. That is why a guy like Ryan Tannehill in the draft or Alex Smith would make more sense.

It is possible that the two sides agree to terms in the next 48 hours, which would create an interesting scenario for the 49ers. If Smith moves on and they miss out on Manning, the Colin Kaepernick era has come to a sudden start.
