Robert Griffin III Impressing The Redskins

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III is headed home to Texas in the break between OTAs and minicamp and the start of training camp. But RG3 is planning on his spending his break working with wide receivers and get ready for the upcoming season choosing to spend his summer focusing on football.

"“This is the longest year of your life. For rookies, coming straight out of college, going right into combine training, pro days, minicamps, OTAs,” Griffin said. “It just keeps going. I’m not going to be sad or mad about it. I have a blessed life and I’m going to go out and make sure I continue to lead that blessed life.”"

Kyle and Mike Shanahan are both praising RG3 saying he’s picked up the offense faster than expected for a young quarterback. Especially considering his limited playing time under center during his college career and Heisman campaign at Baylor.

“You get a guy this talented. It’s exciting, it pumps all the players up,” said offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

More important Robert Griffin is feeling more comfortable with his new team in Washington.

"“I’m just more comfortable with everything,” Griffin said when asked how he has improved. “I felt like I knew where I was going with everything (during Tuesday’s practice in which he maneuvered to find new receiver Pierre Garcon for a short touchdown and veteran starter Santana Moss for a long one), saw certain things in the defense and exploited (them).”"

But all this is a result of the hard work and dedication Griffin is displaying early in his rookie season. He said during the summer that he’ll be calling the Shanahan’s regularly to ask questions about the playbook and pick their brains. Redskins veteran’s are even taking notice, especially tight end Chris Cooley who Griffin has come to for advice.

"“The way he’s come in and worked has been extremely impressive,” Cooley said. “His ability to pick up our offense and his ability to come in our huddle and call the plays confidently, get us to the line, it’s been pretty exciting.”"

And RG3 is just as excited to have their support and believes it is important that everyone, veterans especially embrace him as a leader. He has even gone to Rex Grossman, whose starting job he has claimed, for advice.

"“I know they need to believe in me,” Griffin said. “You need guys that are on your side, that aren’t looking to stab you in the back, but (are) looking to help build the whole franchise up.”"

RG3 was primarily a dual threat quarterback in college, but is preparing to try and master the position like a couple other quarterbacks known to leave the pocket, Steve Young and John Elway. Both Young and Elway won Super Bowls under Shanahan’s lead.
