There was a lot of hype surrounding San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews during the offseason leading up to the 2012-13 NFL season. Unfortunately for Mathews, he suffered a fractured right clavicle during the preseason which derailed his opportunity to get things rolling early.

Now, courtesy of another broken clavicle — this time the left– Mathews will miss the remainder of the season.  Mathews left the game against the Carolina Panthers in the second quarter and told his teammates, “I think I broke it.”

He was right.

“I just hate it for him,” Chargers fullback Le’Ron McClain said. “Just him bouncing back the way he did after the first one. Going into the game, he felt good today. I could see a different look in his eyes today. We were giving the ball a few times, seeing what he could do. He made a few plays, a few great runs. It sucks to come down with an injury like that.”

Mathews has unquestionable talent, but his inability to stay healthy has to have the Chargers discussing their options in the backfield for next season.
