The New York Jets made moves today to dump $24.4 million in cap space. They sent Calvin Pace, Jason Smith, Eric Smith and Josh Baker packing.  Many, including myself, thought that Bart Scott was spared from this list in an effort to restructure his deal to keep him with the organization.

Well, I was wrong. Bart Scott got his pink slip as well and is cleaning out his locker as we speak.

Supposedly Bart Scott’s agent was set to meet with New York Jets brass on Thursday, so something happened in the past hour or so that caused the Jets to change their mind. Means either they decided he wasn’t worth it, or the meeting wasn’t looking promising. Who knows what happened.

But nevertheless he is gone.

Former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is now with the Buffalo Bills and could be a potential suitor for Bart Scott, who is now an unrestricted free agent.

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York says this now brings the cleared cap space total to $30.8 million and leaves the Jets sitting at $9 million under the cap.

“Every one of these players was a major contributor to our football team,” coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday. “I was very impressed with Jason this past season while Bart, Calvin and Eric have been an instrumental part of our defense for the past four years.”
