Houston Texans safety Ed Reed believes that he is 75-80%. He said that if the first game were today, he would be sitting on the sideline, but if it were the Super Bowl today, he would be suiting up.

So what does that stay about his status for the opening game? NOTHING. The season opener is still a little over a month away and we don’t know how long it will take his 34-year-old body to recover. The recovery from his hip surgery is going to take some time. If he rushes back too early, he risks being ineffective and risks re-injuring the hip. It wouldn’t be worth it to come back to the field too early.

He shouldn’t rush his return to the lineup. The Texans would love to have him early in the year, but they really want to make sure that he is available during the playoff run. Rest that body and be fresh by the end of the season. The Texans should have enough talent to carry on without Reed for the start of the year. He can come back and be fresh a few games into the season.
