Asante Samuel, Sean Weatherspoon Injury Updates

Two key defensive players on the Atlanta Falcons went down with injuries during yesterday’s victory over the St. Louis Rams, as cornerback Asante Samuel suffered a thigh injury and star linebacker Sean Weatherspoon injured his foot. FOX Sports’s Mike Garafolo tweeted out injury updates on both players, and the initial outlook on both injuries is good.

Per Garafolo, Samuel only “tweaked” his quadriceps, and the Falcons only took out their star cornerback as a precaution. Samuel sounds like a full go for next week’s game against the Miami Dolphins, and he’ll have to be at his best with Mike Wallace back on burn-watch. After complaining about his performance in Week 1, the Dolphins big free agent acquisition played to his potential against the Indianapolis Colts by racking up over 100 yards of receiving.

Weatherspoon is a huge key to the Falcons defense, and it’s good to hear that his injury doesn’t seem serious either. According to a source close to Garafolo, Weatherspoon has a “foot sprain” that isn’t thought as a serious one. However, Garafolo adds that the results are only preliminary and that there will be more tests on Weatherspoon’s foot later today. His status going forward looks much more difficult to gauge than Samuel’s, and he might end up being a game-time decision against the Dolphins.
