New England Patriots Sebastian Vollmer day-to-day with foot sprain

New England Patriots star right tackle Sebastian Vollmer was forced to leave last week’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a foot injury, and backup right tackle Marcus Cannon stepped in seamlessly for Vollmer, just as he did last year in an emergency start against the New York Jets. Vollmer has always had injury issues pop up during his career (mostly his back), which is why he wasn’t a hot commodity on the free agent market despite his status as arguably the game’s best right tackle.

The Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian reported yesterday that Sebastian Vollmer only suffered a foot sprain against the Buccaneers that isn’t “though to be serious”, and Boston Herald colleague Jeff Howe tweeted today that Vollmer is day-to-day with the foot sprain. Vollmer could miss Sunday night’s big matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, but it’s not a big deal if Vollmer misses one game. While there is a clear drop-off between Vollmer and Cannon, the latter tackle is a capable spot-starter, so missing Vollmer for one game isn’t a big deal.

I think we’ll end up seeing Vollmer as a game-time decision this week, but we’ll definitely have more information on Friday. If he isn’t practicing by then, then I would expect him to be ruled out. ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss tweeted that he did not see Vollmer during practice today in the media access portion.
