After another disappointing season of missing the playoffs, the Detroit Lions have fired head coach Jim Schwartz today, per Lions source. Lions GM Martin Mayhew will still remain the team’s general manager.

Schwartz was unable to take the Lions to the playoffs this season, despite a year with Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler going down for a good amount of time with injuries. The NFC North was up for grabs, but the Lions were unable to take control of it and it ultimately costed Schwartz his job.

Schwartz has had back-to-back losing seasons with the Lions, despite having a roster that has Calvin Johnson, Matt Stafford and Reggie Bush. The Lions will be in search of a new head coach to take control of the talented roster. Schwartz helped flip the franchise around, but he was never able to take the team over the hump and make some things happen with the talent.

Now someone will get the opportunity to work with that talent. They will try to bring that team to the promised land.
