Atlanta Falcons Jake Matthews will have an MRI

Atlanta Falcons rookie left tackle Jake Matthews is an important part of the offense, and it goes beyond the fact that he holds the importance of protecting Matt Ryan’s blindside. The Falcons don’t have much depth at tackle, as the struggling Lamar Holmes starts at RT with Gabe Carimi filling in as a replacement should either of them go down. Well, Matthews did go down with an ankle injury in the second quarter of yesterday’s amazing 37-34 overtime victory over the rival New Orleans Saints, and Carimi predictably looked poor as Matthews’s replacement.

  • The Falcons can’t afford to lose Matthews for a significant amount of time, because he’s a blue-chip rookie, whereas Carimi is a first-round bust. Falcons head coach Mike Smith hasn’t given us any updates but will likely inform us of news when practice opens up this week.

Per a league source close to ESPN NFL Nation’s Vaughn McClure, Matthews will have an MRI on his left ankle today, and we can only hope that nothing turns up. McClure reports that Matthews was spotted wearing a walking boot as a precaution, so this something to keep in mind. The source informs McClure that this could be a high-ankle sprain, which would be a tough 4-to-6 week blow for Ryan and the Falcons high-powered offense.
