San Francisco 49ers Tramaine Brock day-to-day, Chris Culliver ‘doing better’

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock suffered a sprained toe in the team’s impressive opening victory over an overmatched Dallas Cowboys offense and defense, and toe injuries are often difficult to predict on a week-to-week basis. Brock could end up missing this week’s contest against the Chicago Bears, which would be a huge blow given the quality of the opposing receivers. That said, the Bears did flop against the Buffalo Bills sans Stephon Gilmore, as Jay Cutler didn’t look himself and Santonio Holmes seemed determined to eradicated all the praise  that had accumulated during training camp.

  • According to the San Jose Mercury News’s Cam Inman, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio told KNBR that Brock is currently day-to-day, and he also added that concussed corner Chris Culliver is “doing better”.

Both injuries would be massive blows to the 49ers, as they are challenged for depth at corner despite the presence of talented rookie nickel CB Jimmie Ward and surprise rookie Dontae Johnson, who impressed against the Cowboys. Culliver and Brock form a formidable, high-upside cornerback tandem, but they should be considered highly questionable toss-ups against the Bears.

Brock had a fantastic 2013 season with five interceptions, 15 passes defended, and consistently solid coverage. His excellent play while replacing an injured Tarell Brown (now a key starter on the Oakland Raiders) led to him receiving a rare, in-season extension from the 49ers, and we can only hope he’ll be out there to help cover Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.
