San Francisco 49ers Chris Cook will be active

The San Francisco 49ers could be thin at the cornerback position for this week’s game against the Chicago Bears, because it looks like at least one of their starting outside corners won’t be able to face off against the fearsome duo of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Chris Culliver is currently dealing with a concussion, while last season’s breakout star Tramaine Brock is also a toss-up after suffering a sprained toe in the team’s Week 1 romping (well, it would have been if they didn’t ease up) of the Dallas Cowboys.

  • CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reports that 49ers star free safety Eric Reid stated that veteran corner Chris Cook will be active for this week’s game against the Bears, who were his former rivals during his four up-and-down seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Maiocco adds that Cook was spotted wearing a scout-team jersey, so there’s a “strong” chance he’ll be out there as a backup. If both Culliver and Brock can’t play, then Cook has a good shot of getting playing time behind Week 1 rookie revelation Dontae Johnson and veteran Perrish Cox; Jimmie Ward remains locked in as the nickel corner.

Cook is coming off of a horrific season with the Vikings, but a change of scenery could help him realize the potential that he once showed in a Vikings uni. The 49ers are among the best teams at identifying and developing talent, and that includes players in the defensive backfield and veteran projects. He showed some good flashes in the offseason, so we’ll see what Cook can do this week if he does in fact play.
