Cecil Shorts’s status of concern

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts continues to struggle with nagging injuries, and it looks like he will end up missing this week’s game against the Washington Redskins unless if things change quickly. Shorts returned to practice on a limited basis yesterday, so it looked like he would be ready to return from a hamstring injury that knocked him out of Week 1. His return to the practice field coincided with a hamstring injury to standout rookie wideout Marqise Lee, who, conversely, did return to practice today.

  • According to Jaguars official site beat writer John Oehser, head coach Gus Bradley stated that it’s “not exactly good” that Shorts missed practice today. Although it’s been speculated that the Jaguars are just giving Shorts a rest day to make sure he is healthy for Week 2, it doesn’t make much sense to have a rest day in the middle of the week instead of resting him on Wednesday. Why would they rest him now?

It’s unclear if he has suffered a setback, but Bradley’s statement indicates that this wasn’t a planned absence. If Shorts can’t play, then Allen Hurns and Lee will get to feast on one of the league’s worst secondaries. Shorts should be able to return in Week 3 to face the rival Indianapolis Colts and their porous secondary, but this probably won’t be the last time he’s a toss-up this year due to a nagging injury.
