Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West pace Cleveland Browns in upset win

The Cleveland Browns shook the NFL today by defeating the New Orleans Saints 26-24, and the Browns aren’t some toothless punching bag at all. They’ve put together three impressive halves after falling behind to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 and coming up short in a comeback bid. Brian Hoyer struggled today against a talented Saints pass defense, but the running back duo of Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell showed why the loss of Ben Tate isn’t a big deal by pacing the Jordan Cameron-less Browns on offense.

  • This game could have easily been a blowout for the Browns with Cameron out, but the defense did a great job of holding down Drew Brees and preventing this from being a shootout. Mark Ingram and Jimmy Graham did their best, but they were ultimately let down by big days from Karlos Dansby and Paul Kruger, a mediocre display from the Saints star QB, and putrid performances from the wide receivers (Robert Meachem, Brandin Cooks, and Kenny Stills led the WRs with just three catches each).

The Browns have one of the best running games in the NFL right now, and the rookie duo of West and Crowell combined for 122 yards on the ground. West finished with a nice rushing touchdown and led the way with 19 carries, but the even more talented Crowell was the more efficient rusher. Once Tate comes back, the Browns rushing attack will be even stronger as the duo becomes a trio.

At 0-2, the Saints look far from being a Super Bowl contender, and they’ll have to hope for better consistency next week when they take on the Minnesota Vikings, though the Vikes were soundly blown out by the New England Patriots a week after blowing out the St. Louis Rams. The Browns, on the other hand, look legit after this key victory, though they haven’t quelled every question about them just yet.
