New York Giants Jon Beason will not play this week

The New York Giants are desperately hoping that they can turn things around by defeating the 2-0 Houston Texans tomorrow for their first one of the season, as they are coming off of poor offensive showings in losses to the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals. Although the Cardinals are a good team and they kept the scoreline close against them, they were also facing a team with Drew Stanton as the starting quarterback. Eli Manning continues to be the punching bag, but the real goats are a beat up offensive line (their running game has arguably been worse than their passing game because of this) and a vastly underperforming group of wide receivers.

Walter Thurmond is out for the season with a torn pectoral, but the Giants have the kind of depth at cornerback to make do without him. While middle linebacker Jon Beason isn’t out for the season, the Giants will surely feel his absence tomorrow, as Mitch Abramson of the New York Daily News reports that the Giants have decided to hold out the veteran LB for this week’s matchup.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin stated that Beason does not have a timetable to return, and he is largely expected to miss a few more games after aggravating a pretty significant toe injury against the Cardinals (he first suffered the injury in training camp). Jameel McClain is capable of starting in his place, so the Giants should be able to survive. If they lose this game to the Texans, then it’s because they couldn’t play well on offense; not because Beason was injured.

There’s plenty of good news on the Beason front, however, because his aggravation looked so serious that he was expected to miss a huge amount of time. But he has reportedly shed his walking boot, so he could be back in a matter of weeks. Since Coughlin gave no timeline, we’ll just have to play the waiting game.
