Detroit Lions planning to sign Alex Henery

The Detroit Lions desperately need to make an upgrade at kicker, because rookie Nate Freese simply isn’t getting the job done- and that’s putting it as mildly as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s lost all confidence at this point, because he’s come right into the league missing easy field goals, which takes points off of the board for one of the league’s most explosive offenses. Freese has been as unreliable as it gets, missing four field goals for a 3-7 mark on the season thus far, and nobody can remain patient with the seventh-round rookie out of Boston College for this long.

  • Jim Caldwell and the Lions have reportedly been thinking about making a switch at kicker even before Freese missed another one in yesterday’s win over the rival Green Bay Packers, which was highlighted by an incredibly impressive display of dominance by the defense.

Today, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Lions are set to make the switch, as they are planning to sign former Philadelphia Eagles kicker Alex Henery as Freese’s replacement. Henery worked out for the Lions last week, so they liked him enough to turn him into their new kicker. I fully expect the move to go through, but the Lions will have to be wary of Henery’s lack of leg strength. While he is automatic on short and intermediate kicks, he doesn’t generate enough touchbacks. Still, that reliability in shorter situations makes him a whole lot better than Freese.
