Stephen Tulloch tore his ACL

Detroit Lions middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch is one tough guy, because he disguised the severity of his injury pretty well yesterday. Tulloch left yesterday’s impressive win over the rival Green Bay Packers with a knee injury after celebrating a sack, which was an incredibly unfortunate and fluky way to have to bow out of the game. Although Tulloch (I’m still baffled by this) managed to downplay the effects of the injury, the Lions were skeptical and feared that he had suffered ACL damage. Tulloch, of course, needed an MRI today to assess the damage, and the prognosis clearly isn’t good.

  • Per the Lions official Twitter account, head coach Jim Caldwell has announced that Stephen Tulloch has indeed suffered a torn ACL, and he will be place on the injured reserve. All we can do now is hope for a full recovery and a capable next man up, because this is a huge blow to the Lions defense, which boasted the league’s best run D and shut down Eddie Lacy yesterday in what was a key matchup.

Tulloch and DeAndre Levy were playing at an incredibly high level, as the former Tennessee Titans standout had 20 tackles and two sacks before tearing his ACL yesterday. A leader and excellent run-stuffer, Tulloch has plenty of range and has made huge improvements in coverage since coming to Detroit. Now, it’s just a one-man show at LB with Levy, but the Lions front seven is still pretty killer given the likes of Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley up front; it’s just not as dominant without Tulloch, who has never been appreciated enough on a national scale.
