Chicago Bears Jared Allen has pneumonia, lost 18 pounds

Chicago Bears veteran defensive end Jared Allen was ruled out for today’s huge rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers with an illness, and we were all wondering what his illness is. Allen is one of the league’s toughest players, so we were immediately worried at the word “illness” thrown around. I mean, Allen has to be incredibly sick in order to miss a game, especially a storied NFC North rivalry of his magnitude with playoff implications down-the-road thrown in.

  • FOX Sports’s Jay Glazer reports that Allen has pneumonia, and his weight fell from 255 pounds to 237. A loss of 18 pounds is enormous for anyone due to an illness, but this is especially troubling for a football player. Allen still has some speed, but he needs the bulk and muscle to be successful on the defensive line, so it’s clear that he’s in no playing shape.

Well, apparently it’s clear to everyone except the tough-as-nails Allen, who actually wanted to play despite losing 18 pounds and suffering from pneumonia. Glazer reports that he needed an X-Ray on his chest this morning, and, at this point, we can only hope that he’s OK and can make a swift, full recovery with no trouble putting those pounds back on. Willie Young and Lamarr Houston will hold down the fort today against a struggling Packers offensive line.
