Shonn Greene not expected to play

The Tennessee Titans will try and stomp the rival Jacksonville Jaguars today, as the Jaguars have one of the league’s most porous pass defenses and a subpar offensive line to boot. Although the Titans are also in a position to “fight” for the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, they have the better record (1-4 compared to 0-5) by virtue of their Week 1 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

  • Shonn Greene and Bishop Sankey have been splitting carries in the Titans backfield, and the Titans have inexplicably given the talent-deficient Greene more carries than the promising all-purpose rookie out of Washington. I wasn’t big on Sankey in the pre-draft process, but even I can tell that he has more talented than Greene and, at the very least, deserves to carry the load for the Titans (even if it’s just a “trial” so that they can continue to see more of what their investment can do). I mean, running backs don’t have a huge curve except in ball security, the passing game (pass pro and receiving), and patience, and Sankey might be better than Greene in all three of these phases anyway.

This week, the Titans don’t have a choice (this is a relief for some), as Sankey will be freed in lieu of Greene’s hamstring injury. Listed doubtful on the injury report after suffering a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s practice, Greene has never been expected to play. Per a source close to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans aren’t planning on playing him either.

Sankey has a huge opportunity to impress today against the Jaguars, just as Jags rookie RB Storm Johnson, whom I liked as a sleeper, has a chance to impress with talented offseason signing Toby Gerhart out with an injury that he’s been playing through for virtually the entire season.
