New England Patriots Jerod Mayo carted off field

The New England Patriots suffered a myriad of significant injuries last season, somehow managing to overcome them en route to a third straight AFC Championship Game appearance, and one of those major injuries was a torn pectoral in Week 6 to star linebacker Jerod Mayo. Sadly, it looks like Mayo may have suffered a season-ending injury during the same part of the regular season calendar for a second straight year, as ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss reports that Mayo has gone down with an injury. Per Reiss, all of the team’s defensive players are surrounding the leader of the defense, and the Providence Journal’s Mark Daniels reports that Mayo is being carted off.

It’s too early to know the specifics of the injury, but it’s clear that Mayo’s ailment is a severe one when Bill Belichick comes onto the field. Belichick was also spotted earlier today in a suit watching Dont’a Hightower try and work out before the game, but Hightower was unable to play through a knee injury; there are plenty of worries regarding that star linebacker’s status going forward as well.

We can only hope that Mayo has avoided a season-ending injury today, but that’s the worst fear at this point. Based on the somber scene around him and the fact that Belichick walked onto the field, it’s clear that the Patriots are also fearing the worst.

Update: Mayo has been immediately ruled out for the rest of the game with a knee injury, which comes as no surprise. Dan Connolly went to the locker room and is questionable for a head injury, meaning the Patriots are down two captains against a division rival and raucous crowd. With Bryan Stork not playing today, Connolly’s injury has an even more severe impact for the Pats than usual.
