Calvin Johnson listed questionable against Saints

facebooktwitterreddit

Detroit Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson doesn’t seem to have a shot at playing in this week’s game against the New Orleans Saints, as it looks like he’s in the same boat as Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green. Both star wide receivers aggravated injuries (toe for Green, ankle for Johnson) last week, though Johnson’s was actually in a game (Week 5 game, not Week 6). Green and Johnson have already missed games with their injuries, and both are fully expected to be out for another game. After not practicing at all this week, the Cincinnati Bengals officially listed Green as doubtful, though his status can essentially be interpreted as “out”.

  • The Lions, however, are only listing Johnson as questionable, leaving his status up-in-the-air to keep offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi’s former team guessing. The New Orleans Saints have a key injury of their own with Jimmy Graham uncertain, but I think most people believe that Johnson will end up sitting out this week, especially since Lions head coach Jim Caldwell remarked that his star wideout would need a “miracle” in order to play.

Caldwell comes off as a head coach who doesn’t like to risk star players, and trotting Johnson out there this week would smell like a risk. He definitely sounds like a game-time decision, though, so we won’t be able to discern his status until Sunday. For now, though, consider Johnson doubtful.
