Seattle Seahawks get conditional sixth-rounder that can become a fourth

The Seattle Seahawks grew sick of Percy Harvin fighting teammates and trying to bring down the team from a chemistry standpoint, as he reportedly fought with fellow wide receivers Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin and also caused the coaching staff plenty of difficulty. Injuries prevented Harvin from making much of an impact last year, and a combination of gameplanning and Harvin’s own inconsistencies caused him to have a minimal impact this year with 22 receptions for an incredibly paltry six yards per pop. Harvin’s act wore thin while with the Minnesota Vikings, and the Seahawks, who seem to be confident in Paul Richardson decided to cut their losses after spending a fortune in both picks and money for him.

Harvin’s situation has some interesting parallels to the DeSean Jackson situation with the Philadelphia Eagles, except we actually received information about Harvin’s issues in Seattle. More importantly, Jackson is the better player (since, you know, he can do more as an actual receiver, even if Harvin is an equally gifted and explosive athlete), and the Seahawks actually got something in return for Harvin.

We heard yesterday that the Seahawks acquired a conditional draft pick from the New York Jets, and the rumor mill had the pick in the middle rounds. Today, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Seahawks received a conditional sixth-round pick that can become a fourth-round pick, though it’s unclear how it would move up.

All in all, the Seahawks will be vindicated if Richardson plays well and the offense clicks, while the Jets aren’t on the hook for guaranteed money and didn’t have to sacrifice a top pick in their rebuilding efforts. Ultimately, this deal involves risk for both teams, but it should prove to be beneficial for both parties if all goes well.
