A.J. Green will not play, week-to-week

Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green missed last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, though that surprised absolutely nobody, as he aggravated his toe injury earlier that week. Green was considered to have a slight chance of playing in this week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, though he always seemed to be unlikely to suit up. The Bengals left the door open for Green to make his return here in Week 7, but he was unable to practice for a second straight week and was thus listed doubtful on the official injury report. Green himself never seemed to expect to play, and it would have been unwise for the Bengals to rush him.

ESPN’s Lindsay Czarniak reports that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has confirmed that Green will not play in today’s game against the Colts, but this is something everyone expected after the doubtful listing. The more interesting takeaway comes when Czarniak states that Green is “week to week”, meaning that he sounds unlikely to play in the team’s big Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens, so that’s something to watch for on Wednesday.

The Bengals will be the Mohamed Sanu show in the passing game, and it will be interesting to see how he fares out against the Colts defense. He was terrific against the Carolina Panthers soft secondary, and the Colts don’t have much outside of star cornerback Vontae Davis. If Sanu can have a follow-up performance, then he could see plenty of targets even when Green returns.
