Philadelphia Eagles Trade Rumors: Dashon Goldson, Michael Griffin

The Philadelphia Eagles had the NFL’s worst safety duo last season, as they quickly found out that Patrick Chung can’t cover and misses too many tackles to qualify as a legitimate starting safety in this league. They parted ways with him and picked up Malcolm Jenkins in the offseason despite the fact that Jenkins had fallen off in the last couple of years for the New Orleans Saints. Ever since signing with the Eagles, Jenkins has been a revelation, proving me wrong in the worst way possible and making plenty of huge plays while also being steady in coverage.

It’s clear that the Eagles “hit” on Jenkins perfectly in free agency, but they are still looking for an upgrade opposite of him. Per a league source close to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the Eagles are looking to acquire a safety in a trade at the deadline, and they would like to add a quality starter to play over Nate Allen, who is, simply put, a third safety in this league and not somebody who can comfortably start for a playoff team.

Seeing this report, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport informed us that Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson and Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin can be had in deals. Griffin is part of a deep Titans safety group and has plenty of physical tools, but he isn’t someone who can be trusted anymore.

Goldson is one of the league’s most inconsistent safeties and has been a bust for the Bucs, as they spent too much money on him. While Goldson has plenty of talent, he is a strong safety masquerading as a free safety, but he would be a good fit for the Eagles if they restrict him to a playmaking role closer to the “box”. Neither player is cheap financially, but both wouldn’t cost much in the form of picks. All told, I’d rather have Goldson next to Jenkins if I were the Eagles, unless if they prefer to have a better coverage safety.

Vincent Jackson and Doug Martin are already in trade rumors, so Jason Licht and Lovie Smith could be preparing the Bucs for an active deadline after an active first offseason.
