New York Jets GM John Idzik won’t commit to Rex Ryan

On Monday afternoon, New York Jets GM John Idzik delivered his mid-season report. The former Seattle Seahawks general manager was quite vague with all of his answers regarding how he handled the offseason, as well as the future of head coach Rex Ryan. Despite stating that he has developed a strong rep ore with Ryan, Idzik wouldn’t commit to his coach beyond the 2014 season.

In defense of Idzik though, he was absolutely in a no-win position when discussing the offseason and various other issues with the Jets. Everyone and their brother knows about the team having roughly $22 million in cap space, before trading for Percy Harvin this past week. Idzik clearly didn’t address the cornerback position heading into the season, and it is coming back to hurt this team mightily. While cornerback Darrin Walls and converted safety Antonio Allen have done an admirable job at the team’s starting spots, make no mistake that the team are kicking themselves over missing out on Darrelle Revis, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and several other big name corners.

Another area in which Idzik displayed no clarity was with the most important position on any team; quarterback. Geno Smith has officially been benched, according to head coach Rex Ryan, in favor of veteran Michael Vick. The New York Jets are again in a no-win position with either of these men. Smith had the worst quarter of football in his short career on Sunday, throwing not one, not two, but three interceptions in the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills. Idzik wouldn’t answer any questions regarding Smith’s future with the team, even though by the look of things it has to be a bleak one. Matt Simms anyone?

Overall, the future of the New York Jets isn’t a very promising one. As a life-long Jets fan, of only 20 years, but long enough, I feel the pain that the rest of Gang Green’s faithful feel today and most days in recent times. While I am not a huge supporter of Rex Ryan, the shoulder of the blame is certainly on John Idzik. The New York Jets and any other team in the NFL can’t expect to win games consistently when there is no stability at the quarterback position. The same goes for the secondary. In what has become a predominantly passing league, the need for cornerbacks is a must. Saying the Jets have one of the top front-sevens in the league is an understatement, but when you can’t cover the other team’s receivers it becomes very difficult to win games.

I’m not into the whole “tanking” concept and I’m not positive that Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota will be the next Joe Montana, but he is looking a lot more promising at this point then Geno Smith.
