Rest of the season will be the Odell Beckham Show in New York

It seems like the flourishing Odell Beckham Jr. is receiving a lot of attention lately.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Odell Beckham possibly made the greatest catch of all-time last night in the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys.

Beckham ran a go-route down the right sideline and Eli Manning threw up a perfect pass. Despite being interfered with, Beckham leapt in the air and caught the ball while falling backwards with what appeared to be one hand. However, after further review, the ruling on the field was reversed, as Beckham actually only used three fingers. The Twitterverse would explode, and it seemed to be all people were talking about.

We’ve seen Beckham make those catches in pregame warm-ups, but to see him snag a ball with one hand in a real game was a thing of beauty. Regardless of whether or not you consider Beckham’s beautiful catch to be the best catch ever, it’s impossible to ignore his talent.

The bad news for the Giants is that they still lost the game, they dropped to 3-8 and they’re going to miss the playoffs for the fifth time in six years.

However, Beckham has made this Giants team almost must-see television. The majority of football fans, including myself, are just waiting to see what Odell “Stick-um” is going to do next. What ridiculous catch will he make this week? What mesmerizing play will he make this week? I continue to gush about this rookie because he’s something special.

He is the most exciting player on a team full of mediocrity. He’s like Michael Jackson in the Jackson 5. On an offense that is devoid of consistent playmakers, Odell Beckham is becoming a star before our very eyes. The final five games will serve as an extension of Beckham’s coming out party.

In two less (6) starts than Detroit’s Calvin Johnson (8), Beckham has 31 more yards and two more touchdowns, according to NFL.com’s stats and information. Over the last seven games, Beckham has 609 yards and five touchdowns. More importantly, though, nobody has been able to shut down Beckham when he’s fully healthy. All-Pro cornerbacks like Richard Sherman have struggled to contain Beckham’s explosiveness, as he matches up so well against virtually every defensive back. Beckham plays so much bigger than his 5 ft 11 frame, and if the world didn’t know about his abnormal catching ability, it sure does after Sunday night.

He’s been on fire, and he looks like he’s going to be a very, very special player. If he is able to surpass 1,000 receiving yards, which is very feasible, I think it will be very hard not to name him Rookie of the Year. I consider Beckham the best rookie wide receiver, and I also think he has the highest ceiling. He’s been compared to receivers like DeSean Jackson and Antonio Brown. Heck, one NFL analyst even compared him to Michael Jordan.

It’s ironic, because Odell Beckham has been the complete opposite of his team. Unlike the Giants, Beckham is energetic, incredibly competitive and seemingly more athletic than everyone else. The Giants, on the other hand, are lethargic, mistake-prone and well, pretty bad, quite frankly. The one thing Beckham and the Giants have in common is that they both need Eli Manning to play well (only slightly in Beckham’s case) to have success.

Perhaps one of the most impressive things about Beckham’s emergence is that he’s doing it without Victor Cruz in the lineup. Teams are game planning for Beckham and Beckham only, and he’s still finding ample amounts of success. Sure, Rueben Randle is talented, but Beckham has been more impressive in seven games than Randle has been in more than two years. When Cruz returns from his knee injury, the duo will be tough to deal with.

Personally, when compared to “The Helmet Catch,” I think Beckham’s is vastly superior, though it lacks a big game setting. If Beckham made that catch in an NFC Championship game or a Super Bowl, I think it would be unanimously recognized as the best catch in the history of the NFL.

Wins are what matter, so in a season that will go down as a disappointment for the New York Giants, Odell Beckham is enough for Giants fans to be optimistic about the future.
