Dan Herron will continue to start for Colts

The Indianapolis Colts decided to give Dan Herron the start at running back against the rival Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12, and “Boom” Herron rewarded them with a strong performance on the ground, turning 12 carries into a steady 65 yards. He also caught five passes for 31 yards, making up for a fumble lost. Herron’s solid day has been rewarded, as it sounds like the Colts will continue to give him the brunt of the workload, as they clearly seem to be souring on the vision-less Trent Richardson.

According to ESPN NFL Nation’s Mike Wells, Herron will remain the Colts starting running back after last week’s display against Jacksonville, and it’s a move that will likely be met with support by most Colts fans. Richardson has averaged an anemic 3.4 yards per carry this season after averaging 3.6 as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns and 3.0 in his first season with the Colts following the trade that Ryan Grigson swung to bring him in.

Herron is a 25-year-old Ohio State product, and the starting RB job is his to lose at this point. The Colts don’t seem to be keen on going back to Richardson, but Herron’s spot at the top isn’t necessarily safe; he’ll still need to prove himself each week. He should be able to have a quality day on the ground against the Washington Redskins this week, and it will be interesting to see how many touches T-Rich gets.
