Thanksgiving is one of the greatest times of the year as it features food, family and football. Ah, the holy trinity of a relaxing day. OK, depending on your family or favorite football team it may not exactly be the most relaxing day, but you get the point. It’s a uniquely American tradition and one that we all enjoy.

This infograph, put together by qprism.com, is a very interesting trip down memory lane of the NFL’s history on Thanksgiving Day. It was in 1920, the year that the NFL was formed, that the first Thanksgiving Day game was played. Two teams play on Thanksgiving every year and those teams are Detroit and Dallas. The Lions’ first appearance on Thanksgiving was in 1934 and the Cowboys’ first appearance was in 1966. As you browse this infograph you’ll learn those facts and many more.

Some of the greatest individual games in NFL history have been put together on Thanksgiving day. The big names include Troy Aikman, O.J. Simpson and more. The Lions have won the most games on Thanksgiving all-time, although they still have a losing record (check out what it is below). The Cowboys have a great record on ‘Turkey Day’ and you can see their dominance displayed below.

This year’s Thanksgiving Day games are between the Cowboys and Eagles, the Lions and the Bears and the 49ers and the Seahawks. All of these games are exciting divisional match-ups and have major playoff implications. The Lions need a win to keep pace in the NFC North. Both the ‘Boys and the ‘Iggles’ are tied atop the NFC East and are battling for first place and both the 49ers and Seahawks are trying to claw back atop of the NFC West. There are no AFC teams playing on Thanksgiving this year.
