The tight end may be the most difficult position in the league to predict when it comes to fantasy football. Few tight ends in the NFL can act as the centerpiece of an offense, which means that their usage often varies from week to week.

Last season, only two tight ends averaged over 10 fantasy points per game using ESPN standard scoring, but 23 players averaged at least 5 points per game. The NFL’s tight end scoring leader scored only 3 points in Week 2 against a weak Minnesota defense, but managed 32 points against the Chicago Bears in Week 8.

More from Fantasy Football

It’s really tough to predict what a tight end’s production will be each week, which is why so many fantasy football owners end up playing several different tight ends in a season. Often only the top couple of guys at the position can be relied on week in and week out.

However, the position is extremely valuable in fantasy football, and if you can pick out one of the league’s top producing players you have a great chance at having a successful fantasy season. Everyone knows stars like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, and you’ll often have to reach pretty high in drafts to get these big names, but there’s a few other players who can often be snagged later in drafts that can give some excellent tight end value.
