The New England Patriots needed an outside receiver going into 2016. They get a productive one in the fourth round in Malcolm Mitchell.

The New England Patriots used the 112th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Georgia wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell. The 5-11 wide receiver brings a steady presence to the New England wide receiver group, flashing strong hands and good speed on the outside.

Mitchell spent five seasons at Georgia, missing the 2013 season after tearing his ACL in the season opener. He collected 174 receptions for 2,350 yards and 15 touchdowns in his time at Georgia – finishing 2015 with career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (865), yards per reception (14.9) and tied for a career-high in touchdowns (4).

Mitchell started all 13 games for the Bulldogs in 2015, leading the offense in receptions, yards and touchdowns despite lack-luster quarterback play. Mitchell brings good speed (4.45 40-yard dash) and quick feet (6.94 3-cone drill) and positional versatility – lining up both inside and outside.

“I told the Patriots I’m willing to do anything I need to, to help the team any way I can,” Mitchell said when asked about his versatility. “My goal is to get snaps on offense, any special teams. I’ll fill up the water if they want me to.

The biggest concern around Mitchell is his knee problems, missing 2013 with the torn ACL and missing a majority of 2014 with another knee surgery. If he is truly recovered, the Patriots have a player who will compete with Chris Hogan, Nate Washington and Aaron Dobson to be a starter on the outside. He also brings depth to the slot when needed.

Not only does Mitchell bring versatility to the offense, he has a defensive background at Georgia. In 2012 he was named the Charley Trippi Most Versatile Player Award after playing four games on defense, recording three pass break-ups. He was the top cornerback prospect coming out of high school, proving he has the skills to play on either side of the ball. This versatility is something that is a calling card for Patriots players.

“In college, I played everywhere,” Mitchell said. He spoke of his ability to play in the slot or on the outside, and his ability to be successful from any position on the field – offense or special teams.

Mitchell becomes one of many options to replace the production on the outside that Brandon LaFell did not bring to New England last year. He will compete with free agent signings Chris Hogan and Nate Washington as well as Aaron Dobson, who might be getting his last chance with the Patriots. Mitchell’s versatility along with his crisp route running should give him the edge to be a starter right away in New England.
