After all of the struggles at backup quarterback in 2015, the Dallas Cowboys could use a player like Nick Foles for insurance.

With the way things turned out in the NFC East last season, the argument can be made the Dallas Cowboys would have won the division with a better situation at backup quarterback since Tony Romo (shoulder) was limited to just playing in four games.

Now that Nick Foles is available following a release from the Los Angeles Rams, it may be a good idea for the Cowboys strongly considering bringing their former division rival on board for the 2016 season.

Per the quarterback’s request, Foles was released from the Rams on Wednesday and this really shouldn’t come as a surprise when considering how much the team was attempting to trade him before training camp.

After a disastrous 2015 season in which he threw just seven touchdown passes in 11 starts and was eventually benched for Case Keenum, Los Angeles was quite wise to realize how much of a mistake they made with Foles and traded up to No. 1 spot in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Jared Goff.

What made this move even more difficult for the Rams was all of the money lost in the process after the team rewarded Foles with a ridiculous two-year, $24.5 million extension prior to last season.

Still, despite all of the struggles during his only season with the Rams, signing Foles could be beneficial for Dallas when looking at who they were forced to work with last year at quarterback. Between Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel, and Kellen Moore, the Cowboys only managed to win one game with Romo on the sidelines and Moore is the only one of the group returning to the team for the 2016 season.

From an experience perspective, there’s no question Foles would be an upgrade over Moore and the team should strongly consider signing him to backup Romo as quickly as possible.

One disappointing season should not defy what type of player Foles is as his 2013 season with the Philadelphia Eagles (27 touchdown passes and just 2 interceptions) is the perfect example of what he could bring to the table in Dallas.
