Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back, opening up the future for the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott.

To this point, Tony Romo has been an absolutely excellent quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. The former undrafted QB has done everything asked of him. Four Pro Bowls under his belt and with franchise records for passing yards (34154) and touchdowns (247), Romo deserves to go down in history as the best the franchise has ever seen.

But with recent injuries limiting him to just four games in 2015 and now a broken bone in his back, it may be time for the Cowboys to open the door up to the future.

That future is rookie quarterback Dak Prescott.

While the Cowboys struggled to even field a competent quarterback behind Romo in 2015, running through Brandon Weeden, Kellen Moore, and Matt Cassell en route to a 4-12 finish, it looks like the young 2016 rookie may be the answer.

Prescott has been a sensation in the 2016 preseason, posting the fourth-best quarterback rating in the NFL while completing 78 percent of his passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns with zero interceptions. It’s only the preseason, but those numbers already hint that he’ll be better than a revolving door of veteran has-beens who can’t get the job done. Prescott has managed to look like the heir apparent, even in a limited sample size.

While it certainly isn’t the ideal situation for the Cowboys and their fans, it may be time to move to the future and see what the team can do fully committed to someone not name Tony Romo. It could be a hard reality, but it will have to be done eventually.

Romo has been an absolute pleasure to watch over his long career. He’s been superb at times and his consistent production over a long stretch of ten seasons as a starter need to be acknowledged as among the league’s best over the past decade. Still, it may be time for the Cowboys to look to the future.
