The kicking game fails the New York Jets as they drop the season opener to the Cincinnati Bengals.

22. 30. 23. 56. Final

Missed kicks always haunt the team that misses them, and that is what happened with the Jets today. Nick Folk, typically automatic in September, missed an extra point and had a field goal blocked. It turned out to be the difference maker as the New York Jets fell to the Cincinnati Bengals by a point.

The Jets put in a solid defensive effort, setting a record by sacking Andy Dalton seven times.  Leonard Williams started his sophomore season in a big way with six tackles and 2.5 sacks. But, the Bengals were able to dominate down the field with A.J. Green, who led all receivers with 12 receptions for 180 yards and a 54-yard touchdown reception.

This was a game about momentum and multiple lead changes. The Jets could have seized this game at a few different times and weren’t able to do it. They had two drives that stalled inside the five, one that ended with blocked field goal and one with a successful field goal. The Jets were one of the top teams in the red zone last season and it caused them trouble today.

New York had the ball to start the third quarter, and a score would have changed the tenor of that game. But they allowed the Bengals to stay in it, and Andy Dalton kept patient and was able to get the job done. A lot of credit has to go to Dalton for staying with it as he got beaten and battered by the Jets’ defense.

On an emotional day in New York, the home team let some missed opportunities get the best of them.

Three Stars

Matt Forte, Jets — In his Jets’ debut, Forte made everyone forget about Chris Ivory. 155 yards showed that he is healthy and ready to give New York a big year.

Mike Nugent, Bengals — It’s not easy to kick a 47-yard field goal anywhere, but on the road in front of a loud, hostile crowd makes it even tougher. To win the game puts it over the top, so Nugent is a clear choice.

A.J. Green, Bengals — Green was all over the field and dominant, posting 180 yards and burning the Jets for a long TD.
