With Tony Romo nearing his return to the active roster for the Dallas Cowboys, he’s reportedly going to be fine playing behind rookie Dak Prescott.

When Tony Romo broke his back in the preseason, the Dallas Cowboys looked like all hope was lost. After backup Kellen Moore also suffered an injury, the starting quarterback job fell on fourth-round rookie Dak Prescott. It was a venture into the unknown. All Prescott has done in his first season is win seven-straight games to have the Cowboys at 7-1 atop the entire NFC.

However, the underlying narrative to the success of this Dallas team with Prescott has long been what would happen when Romo came back. Would Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones go back to old faithful? Or rather would they stick with what’s been working and keep the rookie in the starting slot?

Romo is now closer than ever to returning, though he reportedly won’t play in NFL Week 10. With his return coming as soon as next week, though, the veteran Cowboys quarterback is reportedly fine with not getting his starting job back.

According to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Romo has said that he’s willing to accept the backup role to Dak Prescott. Rapoport added that Romo’s return could come next week and also that the rookie will have to keep performing to keep the job:

If this sounds a bit vague, that’s because it is and most likely intentionally so. However, you have to respect the willingness of Tony Romo to take a backseat if his team is winning with Prescott.

With a huge, tough matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers looming in Week 10, though, you have to wonder if Prescott’s performance and the final score will make Dallas’ decision. That seems a bit unfair—and unwise—but it’s entirely possible. We have a bit more clarity on the situation, but it remains as fluid as ever all the while.
