Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had to leave their Week 16 game with a leg/ankle injury where he was helped off the field by trainers.

On the same Saturday in NFL Week 16 when Marcus Mariota suffered a season-ending broken fibula, the Oakland Raiders may have lost their young star quarterback, Derek Carr, as well. In the third quarter against the Indianapolis Colts, Carr had been absolutely dealing as the Raiders were rolling. Unfortunately, that’s when disaster struck for Oakland.

Carr, who just began taking snaps under center again this week after suffering a dislocated pinky several weeks ago, dropped back to pass. Feeling the pass rush coming down on him, he tried to move. However, he was unable to get away from Trent Cole.

As Cole was bringing the Raiders quarterback to the ground, Carr’s right foot planted in the ground and the hit caused him to twist while his foot was still planted. He went down to the ground and immediately grabbed for his hamstring and ankle, then calling for trainers to come over.

Here’s a look at the play where Carr went down:

While on the ground calling for the trainers, Carr was saying something to his teammates and the trainers. Not to speculate too much, but it seems as if he’s saying “It’s broke” repeatedly upon watching that back:

Carr was then helped off of the field by trainers, not putting any weight on the right leg.

Once on the sidelines, the trainers got him on the table and tried to shield him from the cameras. However, the CBS broadcast did report that they cut his shoe off and put an air cast on his right ankle—neither of which are good signs for the severity of the injury. Not that Carr’s reaction wasn’t enough to indicate that.

He was then carted off to the locker room, clearly frustrated and still in pain.

Though his candidacy has slipped in recent weeks, Carr was a legitimate MVP candidate for much of the season until some subpar showings of late. So to have him go down with an injury like this while his team is having such a fantastic season, as is the case with Mariota, is just downright depressing.
