The New England Patriots don’t plan on Tom Brady going anywhere, fueling potential for Jimmy Garoppolo trade this offseason.

Although New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady failed to capture his third NFL MVP award this season, the argument could be made that he had the crispest season of any quarterback in 2016. After missing the first four games of the regular season due to a suspension, Brady did indeed come back with a vengeance against the entire NFL.

Even though he may have been fueled by anger, the most remarkable part of his 2016 season was his control of the game. He threw just two interceptions to 28 touchdowns, giving him one of the best TD:INT ratios in NFL history.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots believe that Brady has three to five years left in the tank. Per a source close to Rapoport, this is the reason why the Patriots feel they are able to trade Jimmy Garoppolo.

In the past, Brady has spoken about wanting to play until he is 50, and nobody doubts him. His commitment to training, sleep, and nutrition serves as a model to any athlete, and he works hard in the offseason to improve any flaws in his throwing mechanics or in his ability to escape pressure. By ensuring his release and feet are as quick as possible, he is able to do his best to avoid hits that could take years off of his career.

That said, even though this source points to Brady’s likely longevity as a prime reason for wanting to deal Garoppolo, they may have shopped him regardless. The Patriots did draft Jacoby Brissett with a reasonably high pick in 2016, and Garoppolo only has one year left on his contract anyway. After playing extremely well in two starts last season, Garoppolo’s trade value is at an all-time high, meaning he’ll provide the Patriots with more return on investment than Ryan Mallett. Now is the time to trade Garoppolo, especially since plenty of teams are showing interest.
