Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Perry finally broke out last season with 11 sacks, but he doesn’t need to repeat that type of performance in 2017?

Nick Perry was starting to get the “bust” label thrown on him heading into 2016 with the Green Bay Packers. In fact, some would say they’d already given it to him prior to that. It’s going to be hard for anyone to keep that label on him after last season though.

The linebacker had career-highs in tackles (52) and sacks (11), as well as pass deflections (4) and interceptions (1). Of course, after such a great season, expectations are high for Perry heading into 2017 — especially after signing a five-year, $59 million contract this offseason.

While the Packers, and their fans, would love to see Perry improve (or at least repeat), it’s not necessary. Last season, the Green Bay defense had a lot of holes. They needed as much help as possible, and needed someone to step up big time. That person happened to be Perry.

This year’s a little different, though. The defense still has it’s problems, but they’ve managed to mask them a little better. For example, the defensive line might not have improved that much but they’ve gained both youth and leadership. The secondary meanwhile, has gotten more athleticism.

Finally, the linebackers have gained experience. Blake Martinez and Joe Thomas are both one year older, and could develop much bigger roles. With more linebackers ready to step up, the heavy workload shouldn’t always land on Perry’s shoulders. Of course, Clay Matthews is still a weapon as well.

Let’s be clear here. Perry can’t pack it in by any means. He still needs to produce and disrupt the quarterback as much as possible. I’m just saying if he doesn’t get 11 sacks like last season, it doesn’t mean he’s not just as valuable.

This Green Bay roster features more players who will potentially take down the quarterback compared to last year. They’ve made changes to every position that should help the team in the long run. Perry will be a big part of their success — whether he gets 11 sacks or five.
