With all the rumors recently floating around the internet, it can be difficult to keep track of all the nonsense that most writers are making up for more reads. But don’t worry, we at NFL Spin Zone have got you covered in the ongoing saga of Donovan McNabb.
First off, the talks of McNabb heading to the Raiders seems to be the newest rumor fad.
The prospect of McNabb winding up in St. Louis has been shot down, so everyone decided that apparently it would make sense that he winds up in another terrible organization with which he would never even consider signing an extension.
But hey, if people will read it, what do they care if it doesn’t even come close to making sense?
Then the rumored terms of such a deal make it even more ridiculous. Apparently ProFootballTalk.com (AKA the TMZ of professional football) has a “tipster” who has told them that the deal could be McNabb and Asante Samuel for Nnamdi Asomugha.
That’s it. No picks involved. Just McNabb and Samuel straight up for Asomugha.
The idiocy of this is so great that I’m not even sure where to start. The Eagles are apparently going to trade a franchise quarterback and a top-five cornerback for Asomugha, who is the very best corner in the league.
Okay, maybe on the surface it sounds almost feasible, but not when you consider that Asomugha will make nearly $17 million in 2010. He might be better than Samuel, but it’s not by much — certainly not worth the $7 million more that Asomugha will make than Samuel.
Asomugha for Samuel doesn’t even make sense considering the contract disparity, so let’s throw in a franchise quarterback and make it even worse. Expect to hear more and more about this for the next few days before it dies in favor of the next stupid rumor.
Also, the Eagles have apparently picked the arbitrary number of “42,” and will refuse to take any pick lower than that for McNabb. That little gem is out of the Associated Press.
And last, but certainly not least, we can scratch the Cardinals off the list of potential suitors for McNabb as the Cardinals’ GM Rod Graves has told Darren Urban of the team’s official website that the team has “no interest” in McNabb.
Saying they have “no interest” probably isn’t as true as saying, “We’d rather not give up a first round pick and instead would like to make sure Matt Leinart is a bust before entering into a blockbuster deal for a quarterback.”
That’s it for now. Check back soon though, as it’s sure to get dumber as we get closer to the draft.
