Redskins’ Shanahan Not Ruling Out Top Name Receiver

New Redskins head coach, Mike Shanahan, is not ruling out the possibility of bringing in a big name receiver such as Brandon Marshall or Terrell Owens this off-season. Wait, that felt weird. I opened an article without mentioning Donovan McNabb, my apologies.

Shanahan was asked about any interest in bringing in a receiver and he left reporters with a notepad full of vague answers. “You’ll just have to wait and see.” Shanahan said smiling when asked about any interest.

The Redskins are running thin at the position and it should be a top priority to find Jason Campbell a nice receiver.

Marshall is currently sitting in Denver (or wherever he is sitting) with a hefty first-round draft tender on his back. The Redskins shouldn’t be expected to move their first rounder as it is the number five pick overall.

If they were to make a play for Marshall, it would more than likely be a trade worked out without the tender, and would include the Skins’ 2nd round pick (37th overall).

As always when speaking about receivers, you must include Terrell Owens. A shell of his former self, he still would stand as the Redskins best receiving threat and would be used as a one-year stop-gap. If any year would be the year to meet T.O.’s one year price tag of $5 million, this uncapped year would be the year to do it as it would be off the books next season when the salary cap returns (we hope).

Also expect the Redskins to target, assuming the don’t get Brandon Marshall, Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas with that 37th overall selection. If that is the direction they choose to go in, Terrell Owens would be a great one-year stop-gap player to help transition Thomas to the NFL game.

No matter what they decide, their options are plentiful, but they need to make a decision on which one fits them best and go with it.
