Jets Aren’t Interested in Brandon Marshall
Since the beginning of last season, the New York Jets have been pegged as a potential landing spot for disgruntled Denver Broncos’ receiver. However, Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News is reporting that the Jets are not interested in Marshall, most likely because of the price tag he carries.
He’s a restricted free agent with a first-round tender, so the Jets would have to be willing to part with the 29th overall selection in order to acquire Marshall. From there, they would also have to sign him to a contract worth $8-10 million annually.
It adds up to a deal the Jets just aren’t willing to make, and the Broncos could be stuck with Marshall for at least 2010.
But if I’m the Jets, I think I’m pulling the trigger on this sometime yesterday. The draft is such a crapshoot that I believe the pick would be better off going to a proven, and young, commodity like Marshall.
The Jets made a move for Braylon Edwards, but that didn’t pan out the way they thought. He was only able to muster 30 receptions last season and it might be time for the Jets to admit that he’s a guy who needs a No. 1 across from him if he’s going to be as effective as he can be.
A receiving corps of Marshall, Edwards, and Jerricho Cotchery would be absolutely devastating to opposing defenses and could help prevent the sophomore slump for Mark Sanchez. Even a guy like Matt Ryan went through it, so anything the Jets can do to avoid it should be done.
The Broncos would probably take a second-round pick and a conditional mid-rounder, so this is certainly a move that the Jets need to consider, at the very least.
