Jacksonville Jaguars Trade Quentin Groves to Oakland Raiders

In a move first reported by Quentin Groves, the Jacksonville Jaguars have traded Groves to the Oakland Raiders for a fifth-round pick in Thursday’s draft.

“Duval County….I LOVE U GUYS…thanks for all your support…New Starts=New Beginnings…OAKLAND HERE I COME,” was all Groves had on his Twitter feed a few hours ago, before any news outlets could verify the move. But now the Associated Press and Raiders.com has confirmed Groves’ inside information.

The Raiders traded for Kamerion Wimbley earlier this offseason with the intention of moving him to defensive end, and now they’ve traded for another defensive end in Groves.

A fifth round pick might be a bit steep considering guys like Ernie Sims, Santonio Holmes, Tony Scheffler, and others (all more accomplished than Groves) have all been moved for a pick in the same round. Upon hearing about this trade, my first guess was a sixth-or seventh-round pick, but the Jags might have just kept Groves for that price.

It seems like they talked the Raiders into trading for a guy who could have great potential, as he is a former second-round pick from the 2008 draft.

The Jags tried playing Groves on both sides and even moved him to linebacker last season, but nothing worked. That doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t be successful with a change of scenery, but it doesn’t look good for a guy who was once considered a first-round talent who could change the fortunes of a franchise.

But if Groves will have a chance to succeed, playing in an attacking 4-3 defense like Oakland could be his best bet.
