New England Patriots Select Devin McCourty 27th Overall
After the New England Patriots traded down with the Dallas Cowboys, their second trade of the night, it looked like they might trade out of the first round altogether. However, they stood pat at 27 and took the guy they felt was the best cornerback on the board in Devin McCourty.
It’s a good pick for New England, but again, I feel as though Kyle Wilson was the better choice here if they were going to take a cornerback. McCourty will probably turn into a good prospect, but Wilson is much more accomplished.
The Pats haven’t been able to fully replace the vacancy left by Asante Samuel a few years ago, so they’ve got to be hoping McCourty can finally be the guy to make them forget about Samuel’s play-making ability. McCourty will probably become the starter immediately.
