San Francisco 49ers Select OT Anthony Davis 11th Overall
The Denver Broncos are not selecting here because they made a trade with the 49ers to move back two spots and, in return, the 49ers have given them a fourth-round pick.
The 49ers traded up to draft Anthony Davis out of Rutgers, but I’m not exactly sure why. He’s got maturity issues as he’s only 20 years old, and he probably would have been available to them at 13. The team picking at 12, the Miami Dolphins, don’t have a need for an offensive tackle so it looks like the Niners psyched themselves out in this move.
But with that said, they pick up a guy with immense talent and should have no problem manning down the blindside of Alex Smith — who will need all the protection he can get if he’s going to be successful.
Drafting Davis probably means they move Joe Staley to right tackle, because Davis is probably not a powerful enough run-blocker to play the right side — where teams typically run. Davis is a pure left tackle and, if Mike Singletary can get in his head the way he got to Vernon Davis, he could be a great find.
