St. Louis Rams Select QB Sam Bradford 1st Overall
The St. Louis Rams surprise no one with this pick and select a quarterback, Sam Bradford, in the first round for the first time in the common era of the draft. Bradford may or may not be the best player available overall, but there is no question he’s the best quarterback available.
The Rams are gambling their future on this pick, so they had better hope they got it right. They’re going to make a $50 million investment in this kid before he ever touches an NFL field, but he seems to have the intangibles to go along with the physical attributes to make this work.
Even though they’ve taken him first overall and are basically putting their future on him, do not expect Bradford to start the season. The Rams are not a team that is going to win now, so they will most likely let him watch from the sidelines for at least half, if not for the entire season.
A.J. Feeley, signed this offseason to a two-year deal, is expected to be the starter for the Rams when they kick off the 2010 season. Keith Null could also make a push, but Feeley is a tested veteran who is more than capable of operating this offense until the Rams feel comfortable inserting Bradford.
The Rams get their guy, but they will have to surround him with talent throughout the rest of this draft if they’d like to get themselves out of the NFL’s gutter for the first time in a long time.
