Ravens Expected to Trade Jared Gaither to an AFC East Team
Apparently the Buffalo Bills are beginning to realize the mistake they made when they traded away a Pro Bowl left tackle when they shipped Jason Peters off to Philadelphia. They spent all of last season attempting to overcome a sub-par offensive line, and are now looking to rectify the issue the same way the Eagles rectified theirs.
Adam Schefter, citing league sources, says the Bills are expected to make a play for Jared Gaither, a young but talented left tackle who has fallen out of favor with Jon Harbaugh and the rest of the Ravens’ coaching staff.
Schefter doesn’t elaborate on what the possible compensation could be or what the timeline for the deal is, and only simply says “(the Bills)” want him.”
We’ve seen a lot of player-for-player trades this offseason, but it’s unlikely the Bills have anyone the Ravens truly want.
The Bills are rumored to be trying to trade safety Donte Whitner and running back Marshawn Lynch, but the Ravens like what they have at both positions and are unlikely to be tempted by either player. That leaves draft picks in 2011, but it would likely take a second-round pick for the Bills to land Gaither.
Gaither is a physical marvel at 6’9″, 350 pounds, and has played well in his first two full seasons as a starter in place of Jonathan Ogden. He’s also only 24 years old and has a lot of football left in front of him. The Bills could easily be getting a guy who could start for the next decade — a feat more difficult than it sounds.
Chan Gailey is currently trying to decide between Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm for the job of starting quarterback, but whomever he chooses will need a lot of time in the pocket. Adding Gaither will certainly go a long way towards fixing an offensive line short on talent and help an offense that has been anemic, at best, over the past decade or so.
