Report: Brett Favre Won’t Be Returning for 2010 Season

In an incredible development, it appears as though Brett Favre has decided he will not return to the Minnesota Vikings for one last hurrah.

According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Favre began telling the higher-ups in Minnesota on Monday that he will not be coming back. And according to Jay Glazer, he’s also begun telling teammates, as well.

As you would expect, he’s claiming that his ankle has not responded well after the surgery and he doesn’t believe that it would be able to hold up for an entire season.

If Favre actually does call it quits for good, I will join everyone else in absolute shock. I thought that once he had the surgery, something he clearly was dreading, and then began throwing with the high school kids once again at the now-infamous Oak Grove, Favre in purple and gold would be a sure thing.

But, in typical Favre fashion, he throws us all a curveball at the last moment.

There is still time for him to change his mind, and that could come with a surprise turn-around in his rehab, but it appears as though the final decision has already been made.

If this is truly the end, Favre leaves the game with one of his best seasons as a pro as his last. And were it not for some shoddy officiating, he could have ended it with a Super Bowl appearance and perhaps a victory.

(Sorry Saints fans and Favre-haters, the Vikes were robbed and I think everyone knows that.)

Either way, the Vikings will now have to put their money where their mouth is and win some games with Tarvaris Jackson as their quarterback. The pressure will be off a little bit as not as much is expected, but their fans will still expect them to push the Packers and get to the playoffs.

I guess they can begin sculpting Favre’s bust in anticipation of his Hall of Fame enshrinement in five years, and the rest of the NFC can start feeling a little better about the upcoming season.
