Jason Campbell Is Not the Problem for the Oakland Raiders
You might get me on board with benching Jason Campbell in the middle of the game against the St. Louis Rams because he really did look like he was just in a funk. Sometimes guys just need to take a step back and see the game from a different perspective, gather themselves, and give it another go next week.
But benching Campbell for good in favor of Bruce Gradkowski just doesn’t make any sense. Gradkowski is a quality backup and a great guy to have in case of an injury, but he’s not going to be the face of a franchise or lead your team to the Super Bowl without a defense rivaling the 2000 Ravens — the best in NFL history.
Campbell, on the other hand, is a guy I believe can turn a franchise around if he’s given time. But to bench him right now when he’s operating an offense short on talent and direction could be a decision that costs Tom Cable his job.
It’s his first season in a new system with a new set of guys. The chemistry isn’t going to be there yet. Gradkowski, on the other hand, has that advantage so naturally he’s going to look better for the time being. But do they truly believe Gradkowski is a better option in the long-run?
If they do, then trading for Campbell was a mistake and they need to have their heads checked.
All they’re doing now is preventing Campbell from developing a relationship with the rest of the offense and every game he misses is just going to put them in a deeper hole.
This is just another case of the Raiders having no idea what they’re doing and, in turn, wasting yet another season.
