Santonio Holmes Lets New York Jets’ Victory Fall Through His Fingers

Someone get on the horn to Steve Johnson and let him know there is a bigger goat than him, and his name is Santonio Holmes.

That’s right, the guy who made one of the best catches in Super Bowl history could not haul in a perfectly-placed pass from Mark Sanchez in the endzone. The drop turned out to be the difference for the Jets in their eventual 10-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Head coach Rex Ryan has a fan right here, but why would he have considered benching Sanchez like he said after the game? Sure, Sanchez wasn’t playing great in spurts, but there were several times when he put the ball right where it had to be and his guys just plain didn’t do their job.

If he was looking for someone to bench, Holmes, Braylon Edwards, LaDainian Tomlinson, the entire offensive line, and Dustin Keller all would have been better options.

We tend to forget that Sanchez is not a seasoned vet. He’s been playing like it, but he’s still a young guy and he’s still learning. He needs support from the guys around him, and he got none of it.

Instead, he gets a guy like Holmes who is too worried about looking cool as he catches the ball rather than actually catching the ball. With a hot-head like Rex, I’m not sure how Holmes wasn’t yanked right then and there. But to come out and blame Sanchez on top of it was just wrong.

The Jets are in a free-fall, but only a small portion of the blame goes to Sanchez. Those receivers are big names with big egos that don’t match the mediocre talent.

I think Rex and the Jets will turn things around, but Rex has to be more careful about who he’s calling out after a loss like this.
