Nike will be taking over the duties of creating NFL uniforms starting in April of 2012. Some are worried that Nike could take their tacky approach from the collegiate game. Teams like the Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers, and others have been sporting Nike digs for a few years and the uniforms are often met with mixed reviews. You either love them or you hate them, so that leaves fans of the NFL wondering what Nike has in store for the NFL’s unis in 2012.
“We’re going to be aggressive,” Nike Brand President Charlie Denson said. “Some teams are willing to go further than others.”
Just how far are some teams willing to go? There are teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys who have long kept a very classic look. It would be disappointing to see them make a drastic change and lose a sense of their history.
I can only imagine Raider Nation rioting Vancounver-style if Nike tried to mix up their look. Terrible Towels would be surrounding Nike headquarters if the black-and-yellow were to receive a makeover and don’t you dare mess with the star.
Then there are teams like the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars who are still searching for an identity. Those teams may have a better response to any change by Nike.
Whatever Nike decides to do, it is going to be interesting. For better or worse, the release of Nike’s uniforms in 2012 will be the talk of the blogosphere.
