New Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb finally got the chance to step on the field and give Cardinals fans a glimpse of what he will be able to bring to the team this season. For his first time seeing live action with the team and the quick glimpse we got of him, Kolb looked comfortable and showed some promise.
What did Kolb think of his performance?
“I think it went pretty good,” he said. “All of us got to work out some kinks, they got to get used to my cadence in a live-game setting, getting out of the huddle. There are a lot of things that you can’t duplicate in practice.
“We are learning as we go. We would have liked to put that (second drive) in the end zone but I think, overall, it was successful.”
Kolb was not the only one happy with his performance. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt liked what he saw out of his new signal-caller and is excited about the future.
“First of all, he is very smooth in the huddle. We didn’t have any problems with getting to the line of scrimmage, running down on the play clock. He operated the offense and he knew what he was doing. He made some good reads and made some good throws,” Whisenhunt said. “For it to be this early in the process with him, I am very excited about that.”
Kolb finished the game completing four out of seven passes for 68 yards. He also included 19 yards on the ground — 20 of which came on an impressive 15 yard scramble that showed his mobility.
There is no doubt that Kolb provides an upgrade at quarterback for the Cardinals after the revolving door they had at the position last season. It also helps to have a target at receiver like Larry Fitzgerald who pulled off a spectacular catch last night after Kolb just launched a pass in his direction.
Make no mistake about it, there is still a long way for Kolb to go, but he got his career in Arizona off to a good start and he will only continue to improve as he gets more reps in the new system.
